Wednesday, Jan. 4. A teleqram from. Alexandra today reports that 40 natives under Tapihana, and 20 under Witiora, are within ten miles of the confiiseated line. Friendly have the Hauhaus' expressed determination to light fires at Alexandra. The latest telegrams report them building a pa. Th eGo vernraent believe that there is no cause foi alarm, and that the party threatening are unsupported by the King. Reihana, of Waikato, (a friendly native), says that unless the Government commence there is no danger of war. The natives at Patatere are prospecting, and contemplate throwing open the land for mining. The Duke of Edinburgh patronised the Annual Races. The following are the results : —Maiden Plate, Marine; Epsom Plate, Slander; Auckland Handicap (100 soys.), Catterina; Maiden Produce, Sultan ; Innkeepers' Purse Handicap, Orlando; .Ladies' Purse Handicap, Numa; Farmers' Plate, Catterina. The Caledonian Games came off very successfully. The amateurs of the Galatea gave a successful performance in aid of the sufferers by the loss of her Majesty's ship Captain. The s.s. Airedale, from the South, has arrived in the Manukau. The hon. Mr Yogel was a passenger. Jan. 6. Latest telegrams from the Thames report that the forces under Tapihana and Witiora have joined, and are now near Kopua. They have sent a letter to Colonel Lyon to the following effect :_-"• You are now on tapu ground ; oo to Mangawhiri. No second warning will be sent. The road is now closed. The messenger is not to return." Another message says Tapihana states that the King does noi recognise any other boundary than Mangawhiri, nor does he recognise confiscation. Colonel Lyon has been reinforced. The settlers' families are now in the redoubts. Orakau has been garrisoned. The bon. D. M'Lean arrived here todav by the Phoebe from the South,
Tne Prince leaves for England on the; 14th inst. He will visit Kawau to* morrow. The ship Countess of Kintore has sailed for London with a cargo valued at £71,000, the gold escort ing to 16,000 ounces. The s.s. City of Melbourne arrived at 3.30 p.m. to-day from Sydney, with forty-five passengers for California. ' ■ The barque Rial to and several others have been wrecked off the coast of Sydney. The Australian Steam Navigation Company have offered to charter three steamers for the proposed new n.ail service between San Francisco and" Sydney, contingent upon receiving the expected subsidies. The Queensland Assembly have passed a resolution affirming the authority of the Government to authorise the negotiation with any parties for a mail and passenger service via Fiji to San Francisco or Sydney, Auckland, and San Francisco, at a to the Queens-r land Government of not exceeding SIO,OOO per annum.
