HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 1,871.
District Prize Firing.—We hear that the above will take place on the 23rd instant. United Methodist Free Chuech. —We would draw attention to the tea meeting in connection with the above Church, which takes place this evening in the Oddfellows' Hall. The English Mail via Suez came to hand last night per Taranaki.—A suplementary mail (outwards) via San Francisco was forwarded by the same steamer to-day. Resident Magistrate's Court.— This morning Edward Hawkins was brought up on a warrant, charged with stealing a watch. The case was remanded. District Court.—The District Court was opened this morning pro forma by Mr Hare, the Clerk, and adjourned to the 16th at 10 a.m. We regret to hear that the cause of the adjournment is the illness of Mr Kochfort, the District Judge. A Plucky Challenge, we are informed, has been given by the Napier Rifle Volunteers, viz., 12 of that company to fire against any other 12 men in the Province—the losing side to pay for a dinnei. We believe that the challenge has been accepted., and that the firing will take place in a few days, when a well contested match may be anticipated, The General Elections. —By a New Zealand Gazette, published on the 30th December, we are informed by proclamation that the General*' Assembly is dissolved, and that the warrant for the issue of writs for the election of duly qualified persons to ser\e as members in the House of Representatives has been signed, the wiits to be returnable on the 25th February, on which, date members are called together.
The Napier Volunteer Artillery monthly inspection parade, took place yesterday afternoon, after which the company wa- practised with their sixpounder from Battery Point, at a small cask moored in the inner harbor at a distance of 1000 yards. The practice was pronounced very good, some of the shots going very close to the object. The detachment was under the command of Lieuts. ftoutledge and Swan. The band was also in attendance. Illustrated New Zealand Herald. —"We have to acknowledge the receipt of No. 36 of this paper, dated 29th December. It is quite up to the mark of previous numbers. A view of the "Countess of Kintore" among icebergs; one of the township of Akaroa, Banks' Peninsula; and a full page sketch of the great tire in Christchurch, are specially worthy of notice. There is the usual proportion of Australian views. A Christmas gift is supplied with this number—a large chromo-litho-graph, designed by S. Calvert- 'Under the Willows." It is a pleasing Australian scene—a boating party of two young ladies and two gentlemen, resting under the shade of a fine willow which overhangs the stream. The picture is in every respect well executed. This paper contains a well-telected epitome of the month's news, special attention being of course paid to the Province of Otago, and is altogether very suitable for settler? who wish to give their friends in the " old country " an idea of New Zealand and the Australian colo nies.
