THE NEW BUILDING FOR THE UNION BANK OF AUSTRALIA.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Sir, —-Tt is currently reported that the work of erecting the new building for the Union Bank of Australia is to be done under the superintendence of the person who holds the appointment of gaol and asylum keeper, and that he has obtained the consent of the Superintendent to his doing so. It is also understood that that person is in the habit of undertaking work of this description, and in particular that he has recently supplied plans and specifications for a chapel for the Roman Catholics, and also for certain additions to the Masonic Hall. It is not that there are not others in Napier who are qualified for such work, but that such are unable to compete with him under the circumstance* of his being in receipt of public money for. what is supposed to occupy his time. Sir, if such things receive the sanction of the authorities it is evidently of no use for others to try to live, and small inducement, is held out to such to stay in this Province. Tt is understood that the fact being known to the builds ers of Napier that the work of the Bank is to be so superintended will influence the tenders for the work in a manner unfavorable to the interests of that Company.—l am, &c, Architect.
