AUCKLAND.
Friday, Dec 23, James Mack-ay, junr. has been returned as a member of the Pro\ incial Council, for the Thames Gold Field. The seat was contested by Mr P. Nolan, with the following result—J, Mackay, junr., 371; P. Nolan, 217; majority for s[ackay, 154. Information has reached Tauranga from Opotiki, that Tamakowha, a rebel Chief, has surrendered. Letters also have been received stating that emissaries of Te Kooti havp been visiting the Bay of Plenty, and advises the authorities to be cautious. Te Hira refuses to assent to Mr M'LeanY proposition for re-opening the Ohinemuri case, and states that the claimants are the remnant of a slaughtered rahi.
