"We cannot permit the present occasion to pass over without conveying to our numerous friends our hearty good wishes, in accordance with the almost universal practice of Christendom at jChri-itmastide. Like milestones on the wayside, recurring seasons such as the present mark successive stages in the journey of life, and afford opportunity for noting progress, and, where it can "be done, awarding congratulation. It would], have afforded us most sincere pleasure had we been able to speak of "peace on earth," in accordance with the true spirit of the season; but such is unfortunately not the case. We know that a large portion of civilized Eurppe is at this moment desolated by a cruel and bloody war, and that to hundrecU and thousands of our fellow men the present is a time of wailing and lamentation instead pf rejoicing. But while we ret))ember all this, we may Still be thankful that the sword is kept from our own doors, and we may be permitted to remember the blessings we enjoy, and especially those commemo yafced by the great Christian festival. !£lusting, then, thai "peace on earth" may speedily be restored, we wish all pur readers and friends a happy CHRISTMAS,
