Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1870.

"The Lay of the BeW—We hear that at the next concert of the Mndcal Society, some choice selections from the above piece are likely to be given. Musical Society.—Vocalists and instrumentalists are requested to meet in the Council Chamber to-morrow (Thursday) evening at half past seven o'clock punctually. The Bellsingers announce another of their charming entertainments for this evening, and as this will be their last appearance in Napier, all who appreciate their performance should make it a point to be present. To those who love dancing—as our readers may see—an additional inducement is held out. We hope to see a good house. Cheap Excursion.—Those who wish to witness the hunch of the s.s. Star of the South to-morrow, will see that an excellent opportunity is afforded by the excursion trip of the s.s. Rangatira. That vessel (which will assist in the launch) will leave the wharf at 1 p.m., returning about 5. By advertisement it will be seen that the fare is fixed at a reasonable rate. Accident. ~— A painful accident occurred yesterday to a carter named Peter Cooper. He was engaged in driving his cart when his coat became caught in the wheel. In attempting to release it, his right arm became also caught, and he was thrown to the ground, the wheel passing over one of his legs. The leg suffered no further injury than a severe bruise, but the arm was broken just above the wrist, He was taken to the Provincial Hospital, where we hear he is doing well. The Christmas Holidays.—As may be seen by advertisement, our friends of the Volunteer Artillery have made up their minds to have " a merry Christmas." They ha* e engaged Sturm's Paddock for the occasion, and intend giving a grand picnic. From the published programme there would appear to be no scarcity of amusement for their visitors. We hope that the weather may not prove treacherous, as on the occasion of the last events of this kind. The English Mail via Suez was due in Adelaide on Monday last, and will be due in Melbourne to-morrow (22nd), and in Sydney on Christmas Day. The date of departure from Point de Galle was November 20, so that, if all went well, European telegrams to about that date will have been received all o\ er Australia on Monday. The newspapers and letter. 4 ' by the same mail will be—via Southampton, Oct. 29, and via Marseilles, Nov. 4 ; but papers one or two clays later still may be expecied via Brindisi. The mail will probably arrive at Hokitika in the Rangitoto on or about the 28th or 29th inst.; it is possible, however, that telegrams will be received earlier. Resident Magistrate's <3ourt.— This morning the Resident Magistrate gave judgment in the cases of McKenzie v. Burford and Burford v. McKenzie i—having first explained the points of law involved, in a very lucid and elaborate manner. The two informations laid by the captain against Burford (one for refusal to do duty, and the other for assault) he dismissed, as the matter had not been properly entered in the logbook. He gave defendant a caution against the repetition of such ponduct, and advised him to keep away from the he considered that a seaman who engaged himself for six months, and conducted himself so badly that the captain was obliged to discharge him within a fortnight, had no claim for wages. He therefore dismissed the claim, but without costs. •
