Commercial Intelligence

ENGLISH COMMERCIAL. WOOL. •The following is from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.'a Circular, dated yth October : Since our last report there has been rery little movement in the wool market here, and prices remain the same. At Antwerp, from jthe 13th to the 17th Sept., about 12,000 bales Buenos Ayres and Entre Kips wool were offered at auction, of which only about one half found buyers, at a decline as compared with their May sales of Id to l£d per pound, which would bring thejr rates qn a par with those at the close of our last sales. Although there is a fair trade' in the home market, still, in the absence of foreign competition, we fear prices must rule low at pur next series of sales, and that it will be a matter of difficulty to clear the large quantity which will then be offered for sale. Arrivals to date are—Sidney and Moreton Bay, 36,712 bales; Victoria, 11,152; Tasmania, 1467; Adelaide, 4567 ; New Zealand, 31,404; Swan Kiver, 433; Cape, 30,545; total, 116,280 bales. In addition to about 60,000 bales held over from last sales. NEW ZEALAND FLAX. The same circular says of flax:—Since the oth Sept. we have had a better markef, owing chiefly to orders for the United States of America, and shippers have bought pretty freelv, and paid advanced prices for suitable quantities, good threerparts dressed and fairly cleaned flax showing a rise of fully 60s per ton from the late lowest point. Common qualities have been more saleable, but not quotably dearer. Of 5,240 bales brought f;o auction, 2,750 found buyers, and we estimate the private transactions since the 9th ult. at 3,5Q0 bales. Tow is neglected: 52 bales and 12 tons loose in public sale met only very low offers, and were all bought in. The Anglo-Australian in London says : New Zealand Flax has been lately finding jnore buyers, principally, I think, because a notiop prevails that we shall have a cessation pf shipments to this part, when pur stocks will thereby decrease, and the article command a better price when less is to be had.
