Colonial Prize Firing.—We are informed that Messrs Stubbs, Blake, Chicken, and Renouf will represent the Napier Rifle Volunteers at tlie forthcoming firing for the honor of represent xng Hawke's Ray at the Colonial Prize Firing, which takes place in Auckland. T. Norrie, Moderator, who delivered an able sermon from 2 Cor., iii, 10. At the close of the service the business of the Assembly began. Mr Norrie in retiring, proposed the Eev. G. Morice as his successor to the office of Moderator, expressing his sense of his high fitness for the position. The proposal beinaj unanimously carried, Mr Morice, after acknowledging the honor conferred upon him, read his opening address. Some further business was transacted, and the Assembly adjourned to this evening, when some important addresses will be delivered, and if possible, the proceedings will be brought to a close. A long and important telegram, relating to the postal service, has been forwarded to us by the Postmaster General. We are unable to find room for it to-day. Resident Magistrate's Court.— This morning William Francis Smith was charged by Rewi, a native, with a breach of the Impounding Act, in having rescued eighteen head of cattle from complainant, who was taking them to the Meanee pound. A very flagrant case was at first made out by the native, but under cross-examination by defendant, the matter assumed quite a different aspect. It then appeared that complainant and another Maori named Nikora had driven the cattle 1 near to the pound, and there left them, and that defendant, finding them on the river bank, had taken them home. The Maoris saw him drive them away, and took no action for a time, but shortly afterwards rode after him and attempted to take them from him, when an altercation ensued. —His Worship reserved his decision until this afternoon. Hague v. Flanagan. —A claim of £5 14s 2d, a debt contracted in 1867. Defend ant denied the liability He said that he had paid £5 to Mr Lee, when- that gentleman was collecting debts for the late firm of Hague & Parker, and that he had done carting for Mr Parker to the extent of the balance of the account. —Adjourned, in order that the evidence of Mr Lee, who is at present in Poverty Bay, may be obtained.
