DUNEDIN.
Friday, Nov. 25. In the Provincial Council last night, Mr Turnbull moved resolutions to the effect, that while admitting the Province was better able to carry out public works, the present condition of affairs through the depressed state of the Province, made it expedient that the works should be undertaken by the Colonial Government. Mr Driver spoke well, defending (he policy of the Government, and attacked Mr Reynolds for his inconsistency. The resolutions were rejected by thirteen to twenty three. Mr Calders' moved, as an amendment, that it is inexpedient to recommend the construction of public works until the policy is confirmed, or modified so as to leave the Middle Island free to deal with their own finance for the promotion of immigration and public works. The only way to arrive at such a result is by a. financial separation,—This amendment was carried.
Public opinion, is opposed to the action taken by the Provincial Council. The following gentleman are seeking seats as members in the General Assembly :—-Mr Bathgate, for Dunedin ; W. A. Murray and 3£r Back, for Bruoe; Mr Gillies and Mr Dyer, for Milton; Mr Bastings, for Lawrence; and Mr Barton, solicitor, for Manns Benger. Mr Brutoh, O.E , has been appointed to survey the tramway line from Invercargill to Mataura.
The introduction into the Dunedin Industrial Reformatory of the three bo3'S (half-castes) who were recently sentenced to two year's penal servitude for criminal assaults upon a little girl, only six years old, has caused much dissatisfaction, and already exercised evil influence,
