Now that the ladies are having everything their own way, it is said that printed declarations, with blank forma, are to be used by young ladies who have lovers too modest too propose. The 'adies themselves fill out the blanks, and of course no sensible man can refuse signing them. An instance of how simple an accident may cause death has (writes the Ballarat Evening Post) come under our notice. On Saturday morning Mrs Riern, wife of one of the wardsmen at the hospital, was engaged scrubbing the floor of her dwelling-house, at Sebasropol, when a hardwood splinter entered the thumb of her right hand. No notice was taken of it at the time, but on Sunday the thumb became so painful that a medical gentleman was ca'.led in, who pronounced the wound dangerous, and advised the patient's removal to the hospital. Shortly after her admission into that institution lockjaw intervened, and although everything that could be thought of was done, the unfortunate woman expired oi\ Tuesday morning.
