From Greville & Co.'s Telegram Company, (fieuter's Agents) CANTERBURY. Monday, Nov. -7. The races to-day were well attended. Mai'den Plate—Jfrivy, 1 ; Songstress, 2; Vernon, 3. Lottery Plate—Miss Flat, 1; AtUs 2; Hornie, 3. Canterbury Cup—Peeress, 1 ; Knottingby, 2 ; Marine!*, distanced; only the«e three ran. Free Handicap—Lacenfeed, 1 ; Backbiter, 2. Tuesday, Nov. 8. Yery wet morning. Although the first iace to-day was not to commence until 1 p.m., at 10 this morning the Jockey Club postponed the races until the 10th and 11th insi. Within an hour afterwards the weather again became fine, but the Club would not conr sent to go on with the races. Their action in this matter is strongly and generally condemned. The cattle show to-morrow promises to be a success.
WELLINGTON. Tuesday, Nov. 8. The general Government received a telegram yesterday from Mr Rochfort, railway surveyor, informing them that on all the new route to W&irarapa discovered by hira the gradient will no where exceed one in forty, and he hopes to have the whole line cut down and ready for inspection by Saturday next,
