It is only fair to say that a contradiction, of this statement appeared in the Press of the next day. The Meanee Sprinq Race Meeting took place yesterday on the course belonging to the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. The attendance was very large. The first event of the day was the Hurdle Race, of £2O, which was won by Mr I)onnelley ? s ■ Bob,' ridden by his owner. Mr Cutts' 'Toby' was second, Mr Darners' 'Whakahi' third, and Mr Caulton's 'Walkover' nowhere. This was an easy race for ' Bob ' The rest of the horses having all haulktd at the first hurdle, enabled hirn to get a strong lead, which he maintained to the finish. ?Toby' and his jockey (Huntley) both fell at the first huddle, but fortunately neither horse nor rider were much injured.—The next race was the Hack Hurdle Race, of <£lo> which was a gift to 'Kuapuku,' who was well ridden by his owner, a native named Nikora.- -The Trial Stakes, of £2Q, followed, and was won bv Mr-. Several accidents, move or less serious, occurred at the Meanee Races yesterday. A blacksmith, named Patrick O'Connell, somewhat the worse for liquor, while riding furiously round the course, carne into collision with Mr Palmer, of the Star of the South (late mate of the Luna.) Both riders fell to the ground, and, were taken up insensible. O'ConneH's horse was killed.. Mr Palmer, who had received serious injuries tq his face, was taken to the hospital, and we are hjippy to report that he is doing well. Mr O'Connell was renipved to his residence, Ngaruroro, where he now lies, not having recovered consciousness since the accident.
