Wednesday, Oct. 27. The \veather still continues Very unsettled. The Spring Baca Meeting has been postponed for one week, the coursebeing, through inclemency of the weather, unfit to be run upon.
The trial of Supple, for shooting at Smith with intent, commenced to day. The murderer of Mr Jone'a child, at Sandridge, has been sentenced to death. The'P. and 0. Company's steamer Avoca, outward bouncl to Sydney, .ran down the brig Challenger. There were no lives lost. The new Sydney Tariff changes have caused a complete depression in business. A large meeting has been held, at which resolutions were passed concerning the new Tariff, more especially the measurement duties. Lyall, the Yictorian Champion Walkker, beat Baker by two miles, easily. The match was for £SO a side. A despatch received by the Governor enjoins him to observe the strictest neutrality. Despatches from Tahiti state thai the French are fortifying that place. The half-yearly report of the Bank of New South Wales shews heavy losses in New Zealand. At the public wool sales lately held, the bidding was very slack, Flour, in small parcels, has been sold for £l2 10s. At an Auction sale, on Tuesday, flour brought from £l2 2s 6d to £l2 : 7s 6d. There is no wheax offering, but quotations shew 5s 8d and 5s lOd. Oats are dull of sale at from 3s 5d to 3s 7d. An entire <*argo of new sugars was disposed of by auction, yesterday, for which satisfactory prices were realized. Yellows shewed an advance of £1 to £1 10. Seven thousand packages of sugar, ex Bay Bendixen, was sold by auction, recently, for which good prices were obtained. A parcel of fine Congou tea has been withdrawn for higher rates.
