Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1870.
The Banks will be closed to-morrow and on Wednesday next. The usual weekly parade of the Napier Rifle Volunteers will not take place on Wednesday evening. The export of live stock dm*ing the month of October comprises 222 head cattle and 2,422 sheep. The Hon. the Native and Defence Minister was a passenger by the Luna from Wellington. The Customs Revenue at Port Ahuriri for the month of October amounted to £2,034 12s 3d. The outward mails for Europe, America, &c, via San Francisco, will be despatched hence to morrow, by the s.s. Lord Ashley. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning a single ca?e of drunkenness was disposed of in the usual manner. Mr. Commissioner Branigan and thirty-seven of the Armed Constabulary Force arrived here by the Luna from Wellington on Saturday evening, and proceeded in the Luna last evening for the purpose of being distributed along the East Coa.>t. The Luna had also on board a large quantity of the munitions of war. The Militia Act passed during the la*t session of the General Assembly, and of which we gave an abstract a few days ago, comes into operation to-mor-row (Tuesday, Ist November,) in such districts as the Governor may from time to time specify and appoint by proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, or by such other notification as he shall think fit. Money Order Notice.—We observe that the commission on money orders drawn on the United Kingdom will be doubled on and after the Ist November (to-morrow.) The following are the rales :—For sums not exceeding £2, 2s ; for sums exceeding £2 and not exceeding £5, 5s ; for sum>: exceeding £5 and not exceeding £7, 7s ; for sums exceeding £7 and not exceeding ,£10 ; 10s. The Anniversary Holidays.—Tomorrow and Wednesday will be observed as general holidays to commemorate the separation of Hawke's Bay from Wellington, which event took place on the Ist November, 1858. There would seem to be no lack of amusements " on the board " this year. To-morrow, two picnics are to take place- one at Taradale, and the other on the racecourse, Meanee; and a cricket match between town and country players will also, come off on the racecourse at Meanee. On Wednesday the Meanee Spring races are announced; and a ball in the Meanee haU will wind up the Separation/holidays. We trust the weather inay prove fine.
