THE LATE FIRE AT LYTTELTON.
A telegram from Christchurch in the Wei lington Independent, dated 26th October, says :■—- The subscriptions in aid of the sufferers by the late fire amount, to £SOO up till to-day. Hundreds of persons visited the ruins yesterday. The trains were crowded every trip. Early in the morning the Mayor of Christchurch sent a special train with the provisions, and the Government sent blankets, &c. In the council last night a message was received from the Superintendent, stating that he had authorised the payment of sums to the funds necessary for the immediate relief of the sufferers. The council passed a reply cordially endorsing the action taken by the Superintendent. The whole people of the province unite in coming forward to relieve the distress. The houselees persons are in the Gaol, the Orphanage, the Colonists' Hall, and in several empty stores. The amount of loss by the fire is estimated at £IOO,OOO, while the insurances amount to £23,180.
