Dr. E. Symes Thompson, F.RC.3 , Physician to the Hospital for Consumption, Brompton, recently delivered a lecture on " Stimulants," in the theatre of Greshain College, Basinghall street. By means of an interesting series of diagrams, tables, and chemical experiments, Dr Thompson pointed out very conclusively that by the exercise of a little common sense we can, in a great measure, prevent disease, and when it comes in spite of our precautions, can cure ourselves to a great extent. Paying attention to what we eat and drink is the great and valuable secret, of which the commonest intellect may become possessed. By means of this easily-acquired knowledge, and by putting it to praotical uses, health may be not alone maintained, but, when impaired, it may be restored- Curative measures, as well as preventive, need not be mysteries, as they seemed to be considered by many. Admitting the value of wines and spirits in many forms of disease, he unreservedly adopted the opinion of Dr Parkes, Professor of Military Hygiene at Netiey, who is opposed to their use under any circumstances by men in health. He showed how far preferable, in every respect, were tea and coffee, and regretted that we had not followed the example of America in our treatment of drunkards, who ought to be prevented from destroying their health, (squandering their property, and ruining their families.
