Gothenburg arrived at the Bluff at 10 o'clock last night. She left Melbourne on Saturday, 24th inst. The following highly important news was tele? graphed hours before she left:—Emperor Napoleon is a prisoner in Prussia. The Prussian army still victorious. Strasbourg bombarded by the Prussians —the population starving in the sewers. Bazanie's army isolated, after a loss of 2000 prisoners, 2 eagles, and 7 cannons. The French fleet in the North Sea had an indecisive engagement off Rugen on 26th August. Other Powers maintain strict neutrality. British mediation strongly urged. The German army marching on Paris. The Bank of France suspended specie payment. Consols, 93§. Information regarding Bank rate of discount not directly obtainable. France reported a Republic. Still more astounding information arrived for newspapers. The following more detailed information is from our contemporary's extra of to-day:— Bluff, Sept. 30. The s.s. Gothenburg, Capt. Pearce, arrived here at 9'30 p.m. yesterday. She left Melbourne on the evening of the 24th. The arrival of the English mail was telegraphed from Adelaide at 130 p.m. on that day. Passenger list per Gothenburg:-—For Dunedin —Mr and Mrs W. M. Lamach, infant, and servant, Masters Donald and Douglass Lamach, Miss Allish, Mr Luke, Mr W. 11. Metcalf, Mr De Costa, Mr J. W. Cargo list:—Dunedin, 120 tons ; Lyttelton, 27 tons j Wellington, 75 tons • Nelson, 52 tons. W. Mailler, purser. ARRIVAL OF THE MAIL. ADELAIDE. The branch mail steamer Alexandra, J. W, Brown, commander, with the August European mails, per Malta, arrived off Glenelg at 1 p.m. on the 24th, making the homeward passage in 97 hours; the outward voyage occupied 102 hours. The Avoca, Captain Farquhar, arrived at the Sound on the 3.7 th at 8.30 p.m., and sailed a 2 a.m. on the 18th. The Malta arrived at the Sound at baif-past 6 a.m? on tfce 29th, after a splendid passage of 12 days, 2Q hours—the fastest on record. She experienced fine weather the whole time, and was to leave for Melbourne at 2 p.fti, tfce same day.

SPECIAL TELEGRAMS. Lonpojj, August 19. The Bank of France has suspended specie payments. A loan of 40 millions has been introduced. The battles fought at Weissenburg, Worth, and Forbach were more disastrous than was at first supposed, corps of Marshall M'Mahon was almost annihilated. September I, Prince Napoleon's secret mission to Jtaly has been unsuccessful, Chalons and Rheims were evacuated on the 20th and 23rd August. Marshal McMahon, with a new army, attempted to relieve General Bazaine at Metz, but, after two days' hard fighting at Bazanay, was driven back yesterday beyond Meuse losing twelve cannons and several thousand prisoners and retreated to Sedan. The Prussians have occupied Cozigne. The Emperor has left for Sedan or Rancort. The carnage was terrible. The population are panic-stricken. In England contributions are being raised to succour the wounded of both armies. The fourth German army is in the field, Strasburg is invested by 90,000 Germans. A destructive bombardment has continued for several days. The Governor refuses to surrender, and the population are starving in the sewers. A German army is marching on Paris. General Trochu has expelled all useless citizens from the capital. The fortifications of Paris are being repaired for a long siege. Paris is still hopeful. A loan of 30 millions has been subscribed. A public meeting has been held in Germany, at which it was counselled that the Prussian King should exact conditions that would guarantee a lasting peace. The carnage is still raging furiously. There was desperate fighting for three days between Metz and Verdun, about the crossing of the Moselle. Each side claims the victory, but the French were driven back to Metz. The French position is perilous. Bazaine has lost 2000 prisoners, two eagles, sever canpons, and several Generals; and his army is nearly isolated. The French Emperor is reported at Rheims. The Prince Imperial is said to have been sent to Paris. General Troclju is in command of Paris. The fortifications are being pressed forward. The citizens are desponding. The Germans in France have been expelled. Rome is quiet. Benedetti, Prince Murat, and Count Berustoff have seen Earl Granville and Mr Gladstone at Walmer Castle, and the Queen at Balmoral, fatal riots have occurred at Londonderry. —— ' A contact of the wires having occurred this morning, further communicaton was for a time suspended.
