The Outward Mails for Europe, America, &c., via San Francisco, were despatched hence per s.s. Lord Ashley yesterday. The monthly inspection parade of the Hawke's Bay Yeomanry Cavalry took place yesterday. The monthly inspection of the Napier Ritie Volunteers is fixed for Monday next, at 7 a.m. The following reduced rates of postage are now in force :—Letters posted at any office for delivery at any other office in the colony, 2d per half-ounce. For delivery at the of fice where posted, Id pe<* half-ounce. The Customs Revenue at Port Ahuriri for the month ending 31st July amounted to .£2,113 lis Bd, apportioned as follows receipts, £2,052 lOd, pilotage, £sl 8s 10J; port licenses, £lO 2s. Tije Napier Gar rick Club announce a grand performance for to-morrow evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, the particulars of which will be found in our advertising columns. We hope to see a good house on the occasion.
A London Newspaper a Century old.—Some time since Mr Palmer, of this town, favored us with the loan of " The Gazetteer and New Daily 4dvertiser" of August 2,1770, which is consequently now two days over a hundred years old. The sheet, somewhat smaller than our own journal, is in rather a dilapidated condition; but. contains many matters of interest which we had intended to extract to-day ; we are, however, compelled to hold them over to our iiext issue,
JBall.—We heartily congratulate the Napier Rifle Volunteers on the grea'j success which attended the ball given last night in celebration of the seventh anniversary of that corps. The manner in which the Oddfellows' Hall was decorated reflected great credit on the part of the management. There were present, we should say, between 80 and 90 couple, the majority of whom continued to " trip the light fantastic toe" until daylight this morning. Taken as a whole, the arrangements were decidedly good, and seemed to give universal satisfaction to the happy assembly. "We hope .to see many more similar reunions.
The following notice has been posted up in the telegraph office : Telegrams fan be forwarded from this station to any station in Great Britain, Ireland, or France. Tariff : —For first ten words, £2 4s; for each 'additional word, 4s 6d; address, signature, and date charged for. In addition to the above tariff, the ordinary New Zealand rates will be charged. The route is by mail steamer to San Francisco, and thence by wire. In connection with this notice, it is intimated that the mail steamer leaves Nelson for Manukau this day (Thursday) at noon. Resident Magistrate's Court. The civil charge brought by Mr M'Kinnon, of Arapawanui, against certain natives, to recover possession of a filly, was decided on Tuesday morning last in iavor of the defendants, without costs. The Magistrate stated bis reasons which induced him to arrive at this decision at considerable length —On Monday, be fore J. Anderson, Esq., J.P., a man named Wellesley was brought up, charged with obtaining money under false pretences from Mr T. Reynolds, of Havelock, and committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the District Court.
Despatches were received on Sunday evening by the Government, containing information of a raid by Hauhaus under Te Kooti on a pa of friendly natives at Tologa Bay, but nothing very definite was known of the affair until the arrival of the p.s. Luna yesterday afternoon. It appears that the rebels were repulsed by the Tologa Bay native?, leaving Te Kooti's wife a prisoner, and six rifles in their hands. We also hear thai Ropata has started in pursuit of the rebels, and that he asserts his intention of not returning until he has succeeded in effecting the capture of Te Kooti. We need hardly; say that we hope he may fulfil his, determination,
