We are requested by the Chief Postmaster to notify that the mails for Europe, America, &c, via San Francisco, will close at the Chief Post Office, Napier, on Sunday next, 3rd July, at 10 a.m. The mail for registered letters and money orders will close on Saturday next, 2nd July, at 4 p.m. From the New Zealand Gazette, June 13, we observe that Lieut. T. W. Porter (Poverty Bay Mounted Kifle Volunteers), and Ensign J. W. Witty (Wairoa, Hawkt's Bay, Militia) have been promoted to the ranks of Captain and Lieut, respectively: dates of commissions, June 7, 1870. The latter poition of the oilicial enquiry into the cause of the wreck of the s.s. Star of the South was conducted in the absence of the Nautical j Assessor (Capt. Fairchiid), that gen-' tleman having been called away to leave for Wellington in the p.*.! Luna before its conclusion, ac which time she was well away to sea. I
