Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. MONDAY, JUNE 20, 1870.
Regal and vice-regal speeches, made on the occasion of the opening of b session of Parliament, are famed for their bubble-like emptiness j but of all such that have come under our notice, we do not remember any so empty as that given by his Excellency the Governor on Tuesday, and published in our last issue, We confess ourselves wholly unable to see the grounds of so much granulation, or a reason for the uncalled-for dragging-in of the names of indivi duals, whether Europeans or Maori chiefs—especially as the name of one of the latter, whose services are at least as much entitled to recognition as those of the others, is omitted. In this respect the mover of the reply in the Legislative Council has shown Jus good sense, by making no mention of the names referred to. We observe, too, from the telegrams in pur contemporary, an instance of the forbearance of the Opposition in the Lower House, in that when so good an opportunity for hostile criticism was offered, it quietly ga\ e way to the Government, and suffered tjie address in reply to pass without adverse remark.
