A waterspout broke over the roadstead at Taraoaki on the 19th May, but happily did no damage.

The sitting of the Supreme Court in its ciril and criminal jurisdiction was to have commenced at Auckland on the Bth inst.

From the "Wellington papers we observe that Mr Beeton, farrier, has imported into the Empire City a supply of the "Goodenough " horse shoes, which are so favorably spoken of at home. These shoes are of lighter construction than those generally used; and while affording more protection to the tender parts of the hoof on hard roads, allow the horse to obtain a firmer hold of the ground in steep or slippery places. For stock horses they are peculiarly adapted; they are so snug to the foot that they run little risk of being torn off or becoming entangled—fruitful sources of so many accidents. The Auckland papers record the death of Mr Walter Combes, of the firm of Combes and Daldy, which took place on Monday, June 30, after a long and painful illness, at the comparatively early age of 54 years.

Thirty English yellow-hammers arrived at Auckland on the 29th May per ship Mary Shepherd from London. Another sudden death has taken place in Auckland—that of a married woman named Mary Ann Priaux, aged 30, through excessive drinking. At Auckland, a criminal prosecution for libel—Evening Star v. Morning Advertiser—heard at the Police Court, has resulted in the committal for trial of Mr T. S. Coppock, the publisher of the Advertiser. Bail was accepted.

Mr Commissioner Naughton has retired from the command of Auckland Police Force, with which he was connected for a number of years. On the Ist June an illuminated address and handsome breakfast service were presented to him by the men composing the force.

Inquiries are going on amongst the Government officials in Wellington as to who divulged certain Government information to Mr Gillon, the Wellington correspondent of the Otago Daily Times." Mr Gillon, who was ensign in a rifle volunteer company, has had his commission 'cancelled by order of Mr Fox.

Small finds continue to bo made at the new diggings in Wairau (Marlborough.) A pure nugget of gold has been found, which weighed 24£ dwta.
