The progress of the telegraph
works on the line from Tauranga to the Thames has been stopped by a native named Te Ranapia Kahukuti. This person is a paid servant of the Government, and is thus described by a correspondent of the New Zealand Herald;—"At times very troublesome, but being closely linked with a mob of discontented spirits, it has hitherto been the policy of the Government to employ his services in keeping them well informed of what is going on with our outside friends who acknowledge only the king's authority,"
