THE PROPOSED BRIDGE BETWEEN THE EASTERN AND WESTERN SPITS.
TO THE EDITQB. OE THE HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Sik, —Could you inform the public what is being done about that much wanted gang way or bridge at the Spit ?
It is well known that there are no engineering difficulties to prevent its erection ; the only difficulty is money. But now that it is publicly known that the Provincial chest is so nourishing, a work of this sort, which could be made reproductive, would prove that we could do something more than pay salaries. I hope the member for Petane will see what can be done, and that there be no " sell," as appears to be the case with the member for Mohaka's Waitaha iron bridge. Petane is, and always will be, the road to Taupo. Now that the native troubles are all pver, sick and afflicted people may come to Napier from the uttermost parts of the earth on their way to Taupo, their inducement being romantic scenery as well as recovery of health at the warm springs. The climate of this part of New Zealand is mild and invigorating; speedy commu nication by telegraph exists ; and if the Provincial and Colonial Governments do not act as stumbling blocks in the way of improvement, a bridge at Napier heads would prove a public benefit, and, if neglected by them, might pay a private company.—Yours truly, Economist. Napier, May 19, 1870,
