There was no quorum in the Provincial Council on Tuesday—members not desiring to sit on the Queen's birthday. The Council met at 3 p.m. yesterday, and sat to a late hour last evening. Besides the orders of the day, only two questions appeared on the order paper, In answer to a question by Mr Dolbel, his Honor stated that the petition of the sufferers by the Mohaka raid, in common with other petitions of a similar nature, had been rejected by the House of Representatives. In answer to a question by Captain Russell, his Honor said that the vote for a bridge at Patangata had not been expended, as the general opinion of the inhabitants was that the ttioney could be more economically devoted to diverting the river into its original course. A petition from the inhabitants of Clyde, piaying for a site for a church and school building, was read and received, The Council then went into Committee of Ways and Means, and

!afterwards into Committee of Supply. A very long discussion ensued on the item of £2B to night waiclv man on the Spit, the main question being whether that individual would or would not be correctly described as a " constable." Some discussion took place on the grant of .£SO to Mr Garry, but the item was ultimately passed. Another long debate took place on the item of <£3OQ to improving the botanical reserve ; but much extraneous matter was introduced. Considerable debate took place on the estimates for the various roads and bridges, particularly the Patangata bridge. The estimates having been passed (with che exception oi several items postponed) the Oddfellows' Hall Bill was passed through committee, and the Sheep and Scab Act and Licensing Act read a second time, and ordered to be committed to-day. A more detailed report will appear in our next.
