COLONIAL SECURITIES. [From the Australasian.] A very good suggestion has been made, against which no exception can be taken, unless upon the ground of the uncertainty of our relations with the mother country, and the mistrust which may consequently be engendered with respect to the permanence of the tie which unites us to the empire. The suggestion is to the following effect :—That the Imperial Government should legalise the investment of Coloionial securities in trust funds held by persons in the United Kingdom, and that these colonies should be placed upon the same footing in that respect as India is. Such an arrangement would be doubly beneficial. It would be advantageous to those persons on whose behalf the money would be invested, since they would obtain a higher rate of interest than they are now receiving; and it would be of material service to the Colonies themselves, since there would be more tenderers in the field for the loans they might hereafter have occasion to place upon the London market, and a higher premium might therefore be calculated upon. In a political point of view. the change would be highly important. Multiply the number of English investors in Australasian securities, and you multiply to a corresponding extent the number of persons interested in maintaining the integrity of the empire, and in promoting a more complete fusion of its constituent elements.
