Rain.—A very refreshing fall of rain took place yesterday. Members of the Napier Rifle Volunteers may be measured for their new clothing by attending at MiLyndon's old auction mart at half past six o'clock this evening. The Colonist, schooner, leaves for Poverty Bay this evening at 6 p'clock. The rates of freight and passage by this vessel, as may be seen by advertisement, have been considerably reduced. The South Pacific.—A late number of the New Zealand Gazette contains a number of sailing directions respecting the islands of the Southern Pacific. They are an addition to the Admiralty sailing directions for the Quiz and New Hebrides groups, compiled by Thomas Capel Tilly, 11. N"., Navigating Lieutenant of the mission schooner Southern Cross. These directions will prove very ac ceptable to mariners sailing in these unknown seas. Total Abstinence Society.—A meeting of this society was held on Tuesday evening) 12th April, in the Presbyterian School-room,MrM'Yay in the chair, to appoint office bearers, and arrange future meeting". It was decided that the meetings should be held fortnightly, on T icsday evenings, the next to take place on 26th inst. Mr Troy gave an interesting, address describing the successful initiation of a Rechabite Tent in Auckland, and strongly Recommending the formation of a similar society in Napier.
