AUCKLAND LIVE STOCK MARKET. Auckland, Feb. 18,1870. [MR ALFRED BUCKLAND.] On Saturday last, at the Haymarket, new hay of good quality brought 2s 9d the cwt. There was an increased demand for draught horses for agricultural purposes, a larger supply than of late, consequently but little alteration in values. Young draught stock brought £3O to £3B 10s. Aged draught horses, from £lO to £34 each. Good riding horses were in fair request, they brought fnom £ll to £l7 10s At the Uemuera yards, on Thursday, there was a numerous attendance, and a much fuller supply of stock than usual; calves and yearlings were rather lower than last week, about 2s 6d per head, eighteen-months heifers, sold very freely, they brought from £6 to £7 15s each; steers, of same age were low in price, and brought from £5 15s to £7 2s 6d; two-year t olds from £7 lQs to £9 ; dairy cows at their calving maintained the improved prices noted last week, and if forward in calf, found ready sale at an advance on late rates. Fat cattle were in full supply; about 100 head sold; to the trade. They were of larger size than have lately offered, and of very good quality. Prices were lower—from 2s 6d to 5s the lOOfts. Sheep and lambs offered in excess of requirements; several hundred were withdrawn from the sale, and prices obtained for those sold were 2s per head lower than ruled last week. Purchases of sheep were almost confined to those for slaughter —the graziers fearing continued importation—which occasions the low prices ruling. Pigs were in, moderate supply, and of good quality; they spld ( freely at full rates.
[CAREY, gilles, and hunter.] The horse market has tolerably supplied during the week, and prices have rallied a little. The number 'disposed of at the Durham Yards on Saturday was above the average, but as a rule of inferior stamp. There is an enquiry for good hacks and upstanding horses, but weedy animals are difficult to place. We sold hacks from £8 7s 6d to £l2; light draughts, from £l2 7s 6d to £ls each. There is a slight improvement in the cattle market. Store stock are selling relatively high. Dairy cows are in good demand, superior animals realising extreme rates. Fat beasts remain firm. On Tuesday, at the Junction Yards, there was a slight upward tendency, and above an average number were quitted from 34s to 37s 6d per 100 fts. We sold dairy cows at calving from £ll 15s to £ls 12s 6d, and could have placed several good animals at satisfactory prices. Two-year-old steers sold from £6 15s to £7 17s 6d; three-year-steers, from £8 7s to £9 12s 6d. Several buyers were unable to procure the requisite number. Calves sold from £3 to £3 15s. The sheep market was moderately supplied, and for good sorts an advanced price was obtained. Half-breds sold from 13s to 19s 3d. Lambs from 8s 6d to 13s 9d each. Pigs: The supply continues inadequate. At Waiuku, on Wednesday, an unusually large number of cattle, principally calves, yeurliags, and two and three year old steers, were penned, which met with ready purchasers at extreme prices. 103 head cattle, 6 horses and a large number of pigs were disposed of. Calves sold from £3 to M2s ; yearlings from £4> 10s to £5 os; two-year old steers, from £6 17s 6d to £7 17s Gd ; three-year-old steers, from £8 7s 6d to £lO each.
