DEATH OE CAPTAIN NORMAN. [New Zealand Herald.] It is with unfeigned regret we have to announce the demise of this excellent officer, who, in the hour of New Zealand's distress, was dispatched to our aid by the liberal sympathy of the Victorian Government, in command of their beautiful steam-sloop Victoria, which Government, unlike the Granville autoctacy, rendered us powerful and efficient service, without costing this colony a single sous, Captain Norman, his
ship, his officers, and his ship's company, were " ever ready," and their active and energetic cooperation with H.MiS.S. Niger was so highly appreciated by the la'e Commodore Cracroffc as to draw forth a most eloquent and well-merited acknowledgement on the departure of the Victoria from, our shores. Captain Norman was sent to England to take command and bring out the Cerberus, an ironplated turret-ship, built for the Victorian Government. !ffe was, however, seized with a mortal sickness, and from the European Mail, just received, we learn that he was "fast dying at Ramsgatej where he is being nursed by his sisters. He.has lately been attacked by dropsy, in addition to his other maladies, and there is no possible chance of his recovery. We know well how much he was beloved in the Colony, and how deeply his death will be regretted. It is sad to cut off in the midst of such a useful career, at so early an age, in spite of what has been so beautifully expressed— To live in hearts we leave behind Is not to die " Captain Norman leaves a widow and family, resident in Williamstown, who, it is satisfactory to hear will be provided for by the liberal Government in whose service he died.
