The European Mail says the Duke of Rdinburgh has made a profit of £200,000 by a fortunate speculation in mining shares in New Zealand. The Victorian Government are favor able to sucsidising the Californian mail route, and the Argus, in a recent leading article, supports the same. The question of whether the Colony should continue to pay the Governor's salary is now being universally discussed bv the press of the Colony. The only journal which opposes the refusal to pay is the Nelson Ooloni-t, which ridicules the idea of separation from England. An Adelaide telegram, dated Jan. 27, s'.ys; —“Heavy floods are reported everywhere, with considerable damage. The Botanic Gardens are flooded, and it was with considerable didiculty that the animals in the Zoological Department were saved. There was a very heavy rainfall yesterday at Adelaide —it v>as two and a quarter inches ; and at Mount Remarkable five and three quarter inches.”
