CUSTOMS RETURNS at PORT AHURIRI FOR THE Month ending 31st January, 1870.

AUCKLAND LIVE STOCK MARKET. Auckland, Jan. 29, 1870. [MB. ALFRED BUCKLAND,] At the HayraarbM - , on Saturday last, a less number of horses than usual were brought forward. There was no alteration in values. ( A superior draught horse brought £35 ; aged draught stock, from £lO 10s; common hacks, from 50s to £lO 10s each ; light harness horses, from £8 to £ls ; unbroken stock, three and four years old, a light class, from £5 each. At Remuera Yards, on Thursday, dairy cows brought from £lO 10s to £l4 2s Gd; well bred heifers, forward in calf, £9 to £lO 10s each. A large number of" weaned and yearlings met with a steady demand at improved prices. Good calves, seven to ten mouths old brought from 70s to 90s each ; yearlings, about £5 each. A full market of fat cattle (95 head sold) met with a dull sale, but for Auckland fatted ct-ttle there was no fall in values. Ship-borne stock were lower about 20s per head -. prices obtained were from 28s to 32s the lOOfts. The cattle ex Comerang averaged £lO Is fid each. The sheep market was not so full as for the past two or three weeks, but buyers for the purpose of killing are full, and graziers unwilling to purchase. The greater part of those penned remained unsold, and with the exception of a few choice pens, prices obtained were lower than ruled last week. Lambs were brought forward in less than usual numbers, and prices rallied 2s per head above last week's rates. Pigs were in moderate supply, and in request at late prices. [CAREY, GILLES, AND HUNTER.] The horse market has continued brisk during the past week, and most descriptions of horses, of at all a good stamp, have advanced a little in price. An unusually large number were disposed of at auction at the Durham Yards on Saturday, at generally satisfactory rates to the vendors. Pirst class heavy draught we were unable to place, vendors requiring more than market price. We sold hacks from £8 to £ll 10s; light draught horses, from £l4 to £25 ; some unbroken light draught stock from Wanganui sold at frsra £ls 10s to £24 10s each. Horned cattle have receded a little in price this week, store stock being the least affected. A large number of dairy cows were brought forward at the Junction Yards on Tuesday but mostly of a very second rate quality, really good animals being in request; we found difficulty in quitting the numbers penned. Store stock were a shade easier, but sold freely ; above an average number changed hands. There was a slight decline in the price of beef, attributable to the trade being well supplied and indisposed to purchase any but really prime animals, which command ready sale at high figures. Sheep are plentiful, and prices have steadily declined from Is to 2s per head, which we anticipate will be of temporary duration, as stocks are low; but the weather being so warm makes butchers disinclined to buy largely. Lambs are getting out of season, and vendors have to submit to a lower rate, which considering the size of the animals they are unwilling to submit to, consequently sales are difficult to effect. ■ Pigs have offered in larger numbers than of late and sold readily at full rates. The following is a list of prices : —Dairy cows sold from £ll 2s 6d to £l4; I calves, £2 10s to £3 10s ; yearlings from £4 to £l. 15s ; two-year-old steers £6 7s fid to £7 12s ; beef from 32s fid to 3Gs per lOOibs. Sheep, halfbreds, from 10s 9d to 18s ; merino wetheis, from 7s to 12s ; lambs from 7s Cd to lis. At the North Shore, on Wednesday, a limited number of stock were penned, but buyers were in attendance, aud prices advanced some 6s per head on the price rulling on this side of the water.
