Local Items.
We have been informed that a flax mill is in course of erection at Petane. Wool and Flax continue to arrive at the port in considerable quantities. The Customs Receipts at Port Ahuriri for January, 1870, amounted to £3,036 Is 4d,—the largest sum, we believe, yet collected at this port during one month. The English December Mail, having arrived at Hokitika at 11 p.m. on Monday, will probably arrive here by the s.s. Itangatira, expected early next week. Whaling.—This season has been a very good one for our enterprising whalers at the head of the Bay. The schooner Colonist, which arrived at Auckland a few days ago, was the bearer of some 122 casks oil from the whaling station at Kinikini (Mahia peninsula), which, of course, will have to be added to the exports of this Province. New Zealand and San Francisco Mail Service. —By the courtesy of the hon. the Postmaster-General we have received copies of the contract, the charter party, and correspondence relating to the new mail service with Europe via San Francisco, and thus in connection with the great American mail system Our remarks on the subject are necessity holdover until our next issue.
