THE SAN FRANCISCO MAH, ItOUTK [Evening star (Auckland), Jau. 10. J The opening of the overland route to Europe via San Francisco, though expected to be characterised by Yankee promptness, has come on us with electric suddenness. It would almost appear as if effecu had been studied by the United States Consul, for on the first day of the year there appeared in both the Sydney and Melbourne papers an advertisement, announcing the sailing of the first steamer for San Francisco, via Auckland and the Sandwich Islands, in March. Perhaps we should be premature in congratulating ourselves on pur city being made the permanent port of call; its being the place selected in the first opening of ibhe route was a necessity. We observe that the boats intended for the first trip have been chartered from the Australian Steam J Navigation Co. The following is the advertisement alluded to :—" The Californian, New Zealand, and Australian Mail Steamship Company.— First steamer to leave Sydney in Inarch, touching Auckland, Honolulu, and San jffancisco monthly.—H. H. Hall, U.S r Consul, Manager. 21, Bridgejstreet, Sydney. ,?
