THE NAPIER RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE lI.VWKfi'S 15-U' TIME:?. Sir, —A parade of the Napier Utile Volunteers took place on the parade ground on Monday evening last. There was a very poor attendance, only 14 members having been present, —the members composing the Brass Band not showing on the ground at all. Major Green, the captain commanding, ga\e the men to understand that he intended to send in his resignation at once, owing to the present Government issuing such strict rules with reference to captains of volunteer companies, who it seems are to enforce and be answerable for all fines, and accountable for all arms, &c., belonging to their respective companies. Lieut, Irvine, I hear, also intends resigning, in consequence of a contemplated visit to the mother country. And to add to these, Mr Webb, (ensign), and our senior sergeant (Mr Koch), having actually resigned and left the Province, we may, I suppose, consider that the oldest volunteer company in Hawke's Bay—if not in 'New Zealand—is, after nearly seven years, service, dying a natural death. A requisition to the captain commanding was signed on the parade ground on Monday evening by the members present entitled to their laud, requesting him to call a meeting of members for Thursday, A Volunteer, Napier, Jan. 12, 1870.
