Flax. —The Evening Post sajs that the idea which has got abroad in reference to flax being a peculiarly unsafe cargo is a very unfortunate one for our rising industry, aud will tend, by the consequently increased rates of insurance and freight, materially to retard its development. Already we have seen its bad effects by the. announced cessation of the operations of I Cotter's mill in the Wairarapa, and those among us who possess the means of doing so, should combat it by every means, and if flax (as at present prepared) is dangerous to vessels which carry it, suggest some means by which the danger may be ob viated. A good deal of water is used in the preparation of flax, but there is no difficulty whatever in drying it afterward?, either by exposure to the sun and air or by artificial means. It is a mistake to suppose that heating will arise from insufficient dressing— that circumstance will only render drying more difficult, and in no case is it so difficult to dry as wool. Now that the danger is pointed out, ordinary prudence will suffice to guard against it, and care on the part of those whp pack flax for market will in a short time restore ihe confidence which ill-judged carelessness has so materially shaken.
