"Wool in considerable quantities has arrived in town during the past week. Bank Holidays.—Saturdav, Dec. 25, and Monday, Dec. 27, Will be observed as bank holidays. A Bazaar will be held in the Odd Fellows' Hall to-morrow and on Wednesday. For particulars see advertisement. Napier Debating Club. —Th? next meeting, it will be by advertisement, its announced for Thursday next, 23rd inst. Narrow Escape.—A young l::d, son of Mr John Steed, of this town, fell off the whaif on Thursday last, and narrowly escaped drowning. Major Withers, who proceeded to Wairoa in the p.s. Sturt on Wed nesclay last, was to leave for Napiei overland this morning. The Meanee River was, yesterday, very much swollen, but not sufficiently so as to cause an overflow of its banks. Wa i karimoana Expedition. - The Wairoa Maoris engaged in the above expedition have, during the past week, received the pay due to them by the Government.
An English Mail to be forwarded pei s.s. Wellington closed on Saturday. If it is found that that steamer has not passed the Bay, we presume a supplementary one will be made up this day. The Annual Treat, wliich is looked forward to with such interest by the Sunday School and Band of Hope children, will, we believe, take place on Boxing Day (Monday, 27th December.) A large number of buildings are at present in course of erection in Napier and other parts of the Province, the proprietors being evidently imbued with the hope that the Kai manawa will not, after all, turn out a " duffer.''
Accident.—On the morning of Thursday last an accident occured ion board the lighter 'Greenwich,' 'alongside the Custom-house Wharf, to a man employed in showing wool, by which he had the bone of his left leg splintered, owing to a bale of wool falling on it. Dr. Russell was promptly in attendance, and the sufferer was removed to the Provincial. Hospital. Alleged Horse-stealing.—Yes-terday afternoon, about two o'clock, a young man who went by the name of M'Niell, and who since his arrival in Napier overland from Wanganui (some ten days ago) lias been putting up at the Commercial Hotel, Port Ahuriri, was taken into custody by Mr Inspector Scully on a charge of horse-stealing. He will probably be brought before the President Magistrate's Court this morning.
