FLIGHTS OF FANCY.
TO THE EDITOR OJ? THE HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Sir,—The shipping reporter of the Herald is evidently a genius. If he cannot see further into a millstone than others, he can see further into cargo. Of this anon, after a proper recognition of his rhetorical flowers. In the Herald of the 30th ult. he tells us that after " the Al clipper schooner Success " had passed Table Cape " the wind came on a regular screamer;" and the brig Maggie was afterwards seen, "running, Wee a witch, with a strong southerly gale behind her." Probably iu Indian file, Mr Editor. Again: "The cargo of the barque R. T. Turnbull, now lying in the roadstead discharging, is turning out remarkably well. We do not remember on any occasion Beeing it [i.e., the cargo of the Turubull] turned out better, teas especially." Very likely not, as this is the Turnbull's first visit here. If the reporter means to say that cargo generally has not been discharged here in better condition, then I pity his observation. Considering the tempestuous nature of the TurnbulTs voyage, it would have been strange had her cargo " turned out remarkably well." We may excuse the figurative writing, but for this indulgence the author should in gratitude favor us with more regard to correctness, and the flights of the imagination should not go beyond the confines of truth. Yours, &c, X. C. D. E.
