Napier Debating Club.—The third meeting took place, according to advertisement, on Thursday excising last, the 25th in the building in Emerson-street, formerly occupied as the Militia office, the Kov. Mr Moiice in the chair. The subject of consideration was an essay by one of the members, on "Literary Criticism." The essay displayed con side]-able talent and research, and was enlivened by illustrative quotations from English poets. At its close various debatable points which had been raised were argued with considerable spirit, though the attendance of members was scarcely such as might have been expected on the occasion of the reading of the first essay by a member of die societv. After fixing the business for the next meeting, &c, the meeting broke up some time before 11. The advantages of such a society to the young men connected with it are so obvious as seatcely to require comment. Those who take part in the discussions acquire a habit of viewing subjects in a wide and general manner, as well as from various points of view, while the social benefit resulting from meetings for mutual improvement are far from inconsiderable. We hope to see the societv go on and prosper.
