The Circular Saw Steam Navigation Company's g.s. Phoebe, Capt. 11. Worsp, left Auckland at midnight on the 13th inst., wind blowing strong from the eastward, and increasing after rounding Cape Palliser to a gate, with heavy head sea. On the morning of the Mth bore up for Mercury Island, and lay off there at anchor till the weather moderated,; proceeded on her voyage at 4 p.m. the same (lay; experienced moderate head winds throughout \\\G passage, and dropped anchor in the roadstead at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, lGth inst. We have to thank the purser, IVIr W, Wheeler, for latest Auckland files. ' The Phoebe steamed southwards at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Site arrived lit Wellington at II o'clock morning.

Arriyal of the s.s. Wellington. The New Zealand Steam Navigation Company's s.s. Wellington, Cant. Holmes, left Port Chalmers at 4.30 p.m. on the 12th inst.; arrived at Lyttelton at 10 a.m. on the 13th ; left Lyttelton at 0.15 p.m. on the 14th ; arrived at Wellington at 5.45 a.m. on the loth ; left Wellington at 1.40 p.m. on the 16th ; and arrived at Napier at 10.45 a.m. yesterday. From Port Chalmers to Lyttelton experienced fine weather and smooth water; from Lyttelton to Kaikoras, strong N. W gale and heavy sea; from thence to Wellington, fine weather ; from Wellington to Cape Palliser, strong S.W gale and heavy sea ; and from thence to Napier variable winds and thick weather.

We have to thank Mr C. 1). Moss, purser, for Jate files. The Wellington took her departure for Auckland at 5 p.m. yesterday, with 71 hides from this port. She may be expected to return to Napier .on or about Wednesday next, 24th inst., and will have quick despatch for Wellington and Sonthern Ports.

Another Vessel for the Coasting Trade I?ir our issue of the 4th inst. we mentioned that Mr Thomas Synies, of this port, had left Napier for the Southern Ports, for the purpose of speculating iu a small vessel. Now we arc in a position to announce that Mr Symes returned to Napier in the s.s. Wellington yesterday, and has obligingly-com-municated to us the result of his visit. He has purchased a ketch named the " Flying Squirrel," a vessel of about 20 tons register, and valued at £IOO. She is about 50 feet in length, and 15 feet in breadth. The Plying Squirrel is at present in .Dunedin, and may be expected to put iu an appearance at this port about the middle of next week. She is intended for the provincial coasting trade, and we wish her spirited proprietor all success.

Miscellaneous. During the last day or two the bar has been in a wretched state ; at high tide yesterday, soundings gave only 8 feet of water.

The s.s. Star of the South steamed for Auckland direct at 2 p.m. on Monday last, with 1200 sheep, 5 horses, and a fair complement of passengers. As the Star will this trip pay a visit to Nicol's patent slip, we need not expect to see her again for some ten days..

The s.s. Rangatira steamed for Wellington via Pourcrere at 4- p.m. yesterday, with 2 hhds. and 7 qr-casks tallow. This vessel was to have loft Napier on Tuesday, but insu[iiciency of water on the bar caused her detention.

The Herald, of Tuesday, says that "the barque 11. T. Turnbu.ll has not, owing to the late boisterous weather, discharged any of her cargo." _ This is scarcely correct, as between 20 and 25 tons were landed on Friday, four days before the above, quoted paragraph saw the light.

The Herald has fallen into another error, viz., in stating that the Hero had left for Wairoa on Monday evening. The Hero still remains snug; in the Iron Pot, in company with two other wea-ther-bound vessels, the Maggie and Mahia. We understand that a tdcgram lias been received in Napier stating the probability of an early visit at this port from the s.s. Claud Hamilton, at the present time the property of Messrs. M'Meokan, Blackwood and Co. In the Wellington press she is advertised to steam from that port for Lyttelton, Otago, Bluff, and Melbourne on the 22nd November.

The planking of the new Government wharf is, we learn, composed of hardwood, totara, and kauri. This will afford an excellent opportunity of testing the durability of the various description of timber.
