Lighters bid fair to become numerous enough at this port shortly. In our last we noted the arrival of the Why Not, just purchased by Mr B. "Warnes ; now we hear that Mr Thomas Symes, who left Napier in the Rangatira on Sunday last, intends, during his visit " down South," to purchase a vessel for lightering purposes; and we hnve been told that another gentleman is about to follow suit; so that we shall have a pretty considerable mosquito fleet here before long. " Competition is the soul of trade." The A.S.N. Co.'s Rangatira, Capt. B. Paddle, from Sydney and Melbourne, arriyed at Auckland on the 25th Oct., with large general cargo and 70 passengers. The s.s.'John Penn arrived at Auckland on the 28th October, from Hokitika, Greymouth, Westport, and Nelson, with 120 passengers.
