Embezzlement.—A telegram published by us a short time ago announced thai David Mitchell M'Kay, lmmigratiou Officer at Christohuroh, had been arrested for. embezzling the funds of the Provincial Government, and brought before the Resident Magistrate on the 24th Sept. From the Pi ess we learn that the amount he was accused of appropriating was £36, made up of various sums. Part of his duties, consisted in collecting moneys dua by immigrants, and accounting for them in o manner prescribed by the Provincial regulations. He had been sent to Timaru on !he 23rd August to collect money from, immigrants there, and relumed on «be luth tiept. While at Timaru he had collected the amount he was charged with embezzling, and applied it to his own use. Evidence of the above having been the prisoner was, at the request of tfce p©» lice, remanded till the 2nd October.
