One of the most successful balls ever aiveu in New Plymouth came off on Wed nesday, 29th ulr., in tho Odd Fellows' Hall, on the occasion of Ids Excellency Sir Gr. Bowen's first visit to tho Province. Dancing was kept up with spirit till Night's candles were burnt out, and jocund clay Stood tiptoe on the misty mountain's top. —His Excellency, accompanied by the lion. D. M'Lean, it ft for Auckland on the 3rd inst. in the p.s. Sturfc. Mr Corvington has been elected Superintendent by a large majority, the numbers poled being—for Carrington, 223 ; Kelly, 135 ; Richmond, 31. We take trie following paragraph from the Taranaki Herald, of the 2nd inst. : —" We learn that the lion. Mr D. M'Lean was so pleased with what he witnessed during his visit to the works of the " Pioneer Steel Company," that he expressed his intention ro give its enterprising proprietors the preference, when selecting tho tools, iron wo'le, &c, necessary to carry on the roadmaking system which t\io Armed Constabulary will soon carry out. We are to perceive that the (Jrovernmenfc. and tho Defence Minister especially, are every endeavor to secure to local produce and enterprise, the position which it cer ;airily should have occupied long During his short stay in Nelson, Mr Al'Lean vi-ited tho Nelson cloth manufactory, and upon examination of ihe wellknown first-rate stutf which it turns out, ordered some two thousand yards of tweed for tho use of the Colonial Forces
