THE HORSE ARTILLERY CORPS.
TO THE EDITOR. OE THE HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Silt, —In pursuance of an advertisement in the Hawke's Bay Herald, of the 24th i:;st.. that Mr Cuff" would be prepared to swear in members for the newly-formed Horse Artillery Corps on Friday evening lasr. several gentlemen endeavored to obtain an interview with Mr Cuff, who had volunteered himself for that duty ; but, possibly for some motive of his own, he absolutely declined to administer any more oaths, on the ground, as I uuderstood, that he was engaged in a combat of billiards with a celebratcd antagonist, which to his mind was a far more important affair than securing the services of the gentlemen who were seeking to enlist themselves for the security of the Province. Under these circumstan ces should we be justified in appointing Mr Cuff as commanding officer ? I write more especially to communicate the fact before any election of officers takes place, so that volunteers may at least be informed in what manner or before whom they may be duly enlisted and sworn in despite of any patronage of Mr J. Cuff 1 A Would-be Aetilleiiyman.
