HAWKE'S BAY AND THE NEW MINISTRY. Experience so far militates against the idea that Hawke's Bay will in any way benefit by the late change of Ministers. A priori it might have been argued that the late Superintendent of our Province would have exerted a little of his undoubted influence at head-quarters for the good of the people over whom ho has been chief magistrate for a number of years; but, apparently, this is not to be the case. Oar contemporary haa already pointed out the fact that one of the first acts of the ministry of which Mr M'Lean is a member was to deprive our post office of its chief clerk without giving any indication of an intention to supply his place ; and we have now to point out the fact that Port Ahuriri is altogether omitted from the list of ports at which the mail steamers are arranged to call for the delivery and receipt of mails during the ensuing month.
Our neighbors in the sister provinces may look upon these acts as evincing a determination to exercise a system of economy as disinterested as possible, beginning, as it does, at home; but we much doubt whether such a course of action is calculated to retain to Mr Donald M'Lean that extent of popularity he has been supposed to enjoy in this Province. The mails for Europe, Australia, &c, close at Napier this day; but the said mails will remain in Wei, lington for nearly a fortnight previous to their despatch from that port; and it is not probable that our port will during that time have another opportunity of sending a mail supplementary to this one. We observe, that it is arranged to send a ;
steamer from Napier to on the same day on which the, leaves that port. When we r>' out the fact that one. day '*, , make all the difference betw saving and losing the mail, surely .say no more on that subject
