Sheep.—The Star of the South steamed for Auckland this morning with 1,100 sheep. Earthquakes.—Two almost imperceptible shocks of earthquake were experienced in Napier early this morning.

Gold.—A Suggestion.—A correspondent sends us the following:— "As it is the opinion of all who are capable of forming an opinion on the S'ibject Dr. Hochstetter among others—that gold exists in various parts of this Province, I would suggest that a public meeting be called at an early date for the purpose of torming a company for prospecting such parts of the district as may be deemed advisable. There can be no doubt that the finding of a payable gold field would be of incalculable benefit ro the Province; therefore I put forward this suggestion in the interest of my fellow-settlers, and sincerely hope that something will be done in the matter. AlmOvSt every Province in the Colony is finding, or jtrying to find, the precious metal within their boundaries ; and why should Hawke's Bay be backward in the matter ? We have all the summer before us, and I tiust io will not be allowed to pass awav without an effort in the direction 1 have indicated. Another good reason why we should set about prospecting the country at once is that it would, in my opinion, be the most effectual means of crushing the wretched rebellion which, for so many years, has been the great bugbear of the 'Britain of the South."'
