IMMIGRATION AND EMIGRATION.

We take the following figures from a Government return, showing the immigration and emigration to and from New Zealand during the year 1868:

Major Withers returned from Wairoa overland yesterday.

A Report is current that the Armed Constabulary force encamped at Petane are to return to Napier. The Weather yesterday was fine, but as we go to press this morning is overcast and threatening, with showers.

" R. G. H.," on certain « Earthquakes in the Sandwich Islands," is held over, to make room for Auckland news. Napier School Trust.—A meeting of subscribers to the above fund will be held in the Council Chamber to-morrow evening at 7 o'clock. Fire at Waipawa.—We believe the Sedgwick Arms Hotel, Waipawa, was completely destroyed by fire on Thursday morning before daylight. We have no particulars.

Resignation.—The General Government Gazette, August 6th, notifies that his Excellency has been pleased to accept the resignation ot Ensign John Weston, Napier Militia. "The Illustrated Examiner." —We have received the second number of this paper, which is published by the proprietors of the " Nelson Examiner," and will notice it more fully on Thursday. Wellington Files.—-We have to acknowledge the receipt of one Wellington paper by the Lord Ashley. Through the courtesy of the purser we received a copy of the Independent of the 12th. The Gourlay Troupe.—This celebrated troupe of clever performers gave one of their popular entertainmenrs on Saturday evening to a lar e and—if we may judge by the applause—delighted audience. We have not space to give a detailed account of the performance, but would recommend our readers, if they wish to enjoy a really pleasant evening, to pay a visit to the Oddfellows' Hall to-night. We have no hesitation in saying that this is the best entertainment that the Napier public have yet witnessed. It will be seen by a 4"» eriisement in another column that the troupe will give their last performance here this evening.
