Wairarapa—A. private letter (says the Evening Post) from Wai?arapa informs us that the Otaraia land dispute is again cropping up, and assuming a more dangerous aspect thau ever. The Government 1 have sent up four Maoris up to inquire into the claim which Manihera makes with regard to the land. The Maoris are mustered in force down at Otaraia, and Manihera again threatens to take the law into his own hands. There was to be a korero on July 27, at which Mr Wardell was to be present. Acclimatization-. —"We (Independent) see by the fifth report of the Otago Acclimatization Society that that body is in a flourishing condition; and that through their exertions the once silent wastes of Otago are rapidly becoming as cheerful and musical a? the lulls and dales of merry England. About 100 of the different English bi.ds have been liberated during the year, besides several varieties from Australia and elsewhere. Of quadrupeds, live bush kangaroos have been liberated. English perch and tench have been placed in the rivers, English oysters on the coast, and Australian frogs in the swamps ; while prior to the ist'July about 400 young trout were turned out in different streams, about fifty in each. Amongst the members of the association have been distributed a large number of forest tree?, Cnina tea trees, quinine trees, cork oak trees, and ailanthus glandulosa. They have the satisfaction to report that the English liberated birds have increased, and are frequently met with over a large extent of country. The English deer and wild ducks, although in confinement, have bred, and it is hoped before lomj they will have increased sufficiently to be liberated. The Council again draw attention to the fact that donations of native birds would greatly facilitate the objects of the association.
