Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. MONDAY, JULY 12, 1869. THE ABANDONMENT OE THE WAIKARIMOANA EXPEDITION.
The exceedingly lame attempt in last Friday'- Herald to justify the Government in withdrawing from the attack upon the rebel position at Waikarimoana just as all things were in readiness for the striking of a decisive blow, has led some persons to suppose, that the Lieut -Colonel in command was of opinion that such withdrawal was advisable on account of the danger to which our forces would be exposed. The contrary, however, is the fact. All was quite prepared, and the whole of the forces, European and .native, were most anxious to proceed, with every con fidenc? in the success of the movement, when the ill-advised orders for the retreat were given—in fact, we have heard that Ropata was determined to strike, and not be fooled by withdrawing after all that he had undergone. The new Government cannot excuse this false and utterly absurd step on any ground of economy, as the contrary is the case, the expense of the undertaking being little different whether it be prosecuted to a successful issue, or ingloriously abandoned—for which abandonment, with all deference to our contemporary, we have not to thank the late but the piesent Ministry. That step will be regarded by the rebels as an admission of defeat, and it will be strange if we do not yet suffer for it in new aggressions:
