Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 1869. THE OPERATIONS AT WAIKARIMOANA.
We understand that everything is now ready for the prosecution of operations against the rebels at the Waikarimoana Lake, the pontoons and boats being finished, and the friendly natives anxious to proceed. Lieut.-Colonel Herrick only awaits orders for the execution of the work. The Wellington papers received last night say that Mr Ormond has instructions to stay the proceedings and recall the force from that position. If this be true, we think it a grievous error on the part of the new Ministry, and will lay it open to the charge of reckless extravagance so industriously circulated against their predecessors. Colonel Herrick is now on a visit to Napier, having come in last night. We suppose a day or two will show whether the important work he has begun, and so far successfully con ducted, is to be proceeded with or abandoned.
The s.s. Storm Bird leaves for Wellington this evening, A mail for England, &c, via Suez, closes at Wellington at 9 a.m. on Saturday; intending correspondents, therefore, would do well to take advantage of the Storm Bird's leaving.
