Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri, MONDAY, JUNE 28,1869. THE DEFEAT OF THE STAFFORD MINISTRY.
Since our last publication the "no confidence" question has been decided, the debate having been brought to a rather premature close, and the division taken some days earlier than it was expected to come off. The result, as will be seen from our telecram, has been the defeat of the Stafford Ministry and its resignation. This result can scarcely be wondered at when we take into consideration the obstacles raised in the way of the carrying out of its policy by an Auckland clique, through the Governor and the Colonial office—a subject to which we intend to recur on an early occasion. So far as we can gather from our private information, the following is the probable 'personnel of the new ministry :—Mr Fox, Piemier; Mr Vogel, Treasurer ; Mr M'Lean, Native and Defence Minister; Colonel Caigill, Postmaster General; Mr F. Dillon Bell, seat without portfolio; Mr John Williamson, Resident Minister in Auckland. The General Government agent for Hawke's Bay will probably be Mr Ormond. It will be seen that Mr M'Lean has overcome his objections to the responsibilities of office, for our new Premier is rather too much of a Fox to place power in his hands without it. We rather anxiously await the declaration of the policy of the new Ministry—more especially as it is one in which the representatives of Canterbury and Nelson are entirely ignored.
