The Government having been defeated by so large a majority as 11, it is expected now tha+ the Ministry will resign, not dissolve, as was at first supposed. June 25, 3.30 p.m. On the House of Representatives meeting at 3 o'clock this afternoon, Mr Staftord announced that, in consequence of last night's vote, the Ministry had tendered their resignations to the Governor, and that His Excellency had been pleased to accept them. He hoped very shortly to be able to inform the house of the result of his attempt. The House then adjourned until Tuesday, 29 th inst.
The p.s. Sturt, from Auckland via the East Coast, arrived in port at a late hour last evening. The St. Kilda suceeded in landing her full cariro of stores at "Wairoa on Friday, after several unsuccessful attempts on previous occasions. A small detachment of the Guides, un der Captain Coventry, arrived by the St, Kilda, en route to Te Haroto, for which place they marched on Saturday. Correction.—We are requested to correct a misreport of Colonel Haultain's remarks when replying to Major Heaphy's motion for producing papers connected with the Mohaka expedition. In "Hansard" the Defence Minister is made to state that, "unfortunately, the forces that moved to Mohaka were not inclined to come in contact with the enemy," &c, whereas what he did say was, "not in time," &c. This of course alters the whole meaning of the sentence. Colonel Haultain's letter of thanks to the Napier Militia and Volunteers speak? in the highest terms of their conduct, and be repeated this in his speech on the 'No confidence " motion, which we ma y probably publish.
